In honor of Black History Month, Gotham Avenue School hosted its first annual Black History Month Panel Interview on Feb. 28. The purpose of the event was to highlight African American role models, particularly local figures the students can look up to.

“We have our own heroes right here in our community,” Principal William Mingo said at the start of the panel.

The school invited Interim Superintendent of Schools Dr. Kenneth Card, Assistant Director of PPS Helisse Palmore and obstetrics and gynecology specialist Dr. Allen Toles to participate in the panel.

Members of Student Government asked the panelists questions, including “What is your current profession?” “What is your cultural background?” “What and who has influenced you in your personal and professional goals?” “What advice can you give to all of our Gotham Avenue scholars?” and “What does Black History Month mean to you?”

Each panelist took turns answering every question, giving the students a variety of responses, advice and life experiences.
