Message from the Principal

Greetings,

On behalf of the Dutch Broadway School’s faculty and staff, we are pleased to welcome you back for the 2021-2022 school year! A special welcome is extended to all of the new families joining the Dutch Broadway School family. I am honored to be your principal. It is a true privilege to be a part of a community where parents, teachers, and students care for each other and strive to build positive relationships that support academic success and social growth. Although this school year is starting out much differently than the norm, I look forward to getting to know the students as I form positive and supportive relationships with them. As we welcome the children back, one of our primary focuses will be to nurture our children’s social-emotional learning. Dutch Broadway’s faculty, consisting of both teachers and the school’s Mental Health Team has formed a committee to initiate “Project Good Vibes,” a combination of mindfulness strategies and character development activities. In keeping with the district’s mission to “Educate the Whole Child,” this initiative will provide the students with daily mindfulness breathing techniques and monthly themed activities. These resources will provide the students, who may have been directly or indirectly affected by the recent events, with an array of strategies and coping skills. A key factor to student success is the partnership between home and school and this is most important now more than ever. To enhance communication between all stakeholders, the district has provided our families with the following resources:

  • The Remind app – your child’s teacher will provide detailed information on how you can join your child(ren)’s class. This feature will allow teachers and parents to communicate directly with one another.
  • The Elmont District app – from your favorite app store download Elmont Union Free School District. When installed click on the tool and check off Dutch Broadway. You will receive all notifications sent by the school.
  • The Elmont UFSD website – www.elmontschools.org – Visit the website to receive the most up-to-date information throughout the school year.
  • Blackboard Connect – a pre-recorded voice call sent to the phone number on file. We ask that your contact information be updated accordingly.

Our teachers understand that part of our children’s success relies heavily on the support offered both at school and at home and realize that a strong partnership with you will make a great difference in your child’s education. I am certain that our common responsibility for our children’s success will provide fruitful outcomes as the year progresses no matter the challenges.

My door is always open. Please feel free to call or email me to discuss any concerns you might have throughout the school year. Thank you for your continued support as we work together as a school community inspiring our children to strive for and achieve their goals.

Sincerely,
Mrs. Cynthia Qasim
Principal, Dutch Broadway School

Dutch Broadway School’s winter clubs culminated with a showcase for parents/guardians on Feb. 16. Students in grades K-6 explored their interests in multiple new club offerings over the course of six weeks.

This year’s clubs included 3D Printing, Broadcasting, Coding, Drones, Fashion, Fitness, Mindfulness, Photography, Robotics, Science, Soccer, STEAM and Virtual Reality. The clubs were split by grade-levels, with younger students grouped together and older students grouped together.

Families were invited to see what the students have learned and been working on, including robot demonstrations, their 3D printed works, photos and more.

Principal Cynthia Qasim spoke about the importance of exposing students to clubs and extracurriculars at a young age since students at Dutch Broadway can participate in clubs as early as kindergarten. After the success of this year, the school plans to offer the clubs again next winter.

Dutch Broadway School recently invited students and their families to enjoy a night of community, collaboration and mathematics at Family Math Night. Approximately 90 students and family members attended the event.

Sponsored by the Building Advisory Committee, the event was held to help equip parents/guardians to be partners in their child’s mathematics education by showcasing fun ways to support learning at home.

The event featured three different stations for students and their family member to engage in math games. Kindergarten and first grade students played “Roll Away Addition and Subtraction,” “Tower Challenge!” and “Tens Go Fish.” Second and third grade students played “Math Facts Jenga,” “Addition and Subtraction Bingo” and “Place Value Number Battle.” Fourth, fifth and sixth grade students played, “Multiplication Yahtzee,” “Long Division War” and “The Game of 24.”

After the event, families went home with goody bags containing directions and manipulatives so they could continue playing the games at home. Some of the concepts the activities addressed included counting, addition, subtraction, fractions and more.

“It’s always exciting to host family nights because they allow students and families to engage in activities together,” Principal Cynthia Qasim said. “Events like these foster students’ love of learning and showcase creative and fun ways families can support learning at home.”
