On May 20, Alden Terrace School scholars celebrated the building’s annual International Day, honoring countries and cultures from around the world. Each grade level was assigned a specific country to explore – delving into its traditions, politics, food, topography, art and athletics. This year, the event featured countries that participated in the 2024 Summer Olympics.
Pre-K students explored Spain, kindergarteners focused on Iceland, first graders studied Australia, second graders learned about France, third graders highlighted Greece, fourth graders researched Morocco, fifth graders presented on Zambia and sixth graders covered Singapore. Additionally, scholars in Mr. Yates, Ms. Connor, Mr. Whalen, Mr. Genovese and Mrs. Karmin’s classes researched Canada.
Guests were transported to different countries as they entered classrooms and walked the hallways decorated with vibrant displays, reflecting the students’ collaborative projects. Families were invited to tour these immersive presentations and witness the students’ hard work and creativity firsthand. Scholars received passports to “travel around the world” and view their peers’ projects, as well.
In addition to classroom activities, the entire school united for a community bulletin board. Faculty, scholars, custodians, cafeteria staff and families contributed cultural facts and personal stories from their native countries, fostering a deeper sense of inclusivity amongst the school community.
“This yearly tradition offers our scholars a window into the world,” Principal Shawnee Warfield said.
