Message from the Principal

Greetings,

Dutch Broadway School, located in the vibrant community of Elmont, New York, is more than just a place of learning - it’s a hub of opportunity, diversity, and academic excellence. At Dutch Broadway, we are committed to providing a nurturing and inclusive environment where students thrive. With a dedicated team of educators, innovative programs, and a strong sense of community, we’re shaping the future leaders of tomorrow.

In addition to receiving physical education, art, music, literacy, and library, our students also have an opportunity to participate in programs that enrich the general curriculum, including Model UN, Math Olympiads, Student Council, Art Club, Chorus, Band, Orchestra, and Lego Robotics. Kindergarten – sixth-grade students can also participate in after-school clubs that help develop their science, technology, engineering, and art skills. Students engage in activities in the school’s Science and STEAM Labs.

In keeping with the district’s mission to “Educate the Whole Child,” Dutch Broadway prides itself on implementing its Social Emotional Learning initiative, which provides students with daily mindfulness breathing techniques, child yoga exercises, and monthly themed activities. These resources will provide students with an array of strategies and coping skills.

A key factor to student success is the partnership between home and school. To enhance communication between all stakeholders, the Elmont Union Free School District has provided our families with the following resources:

  • The Remind app – your child’s teacher will provide detailed information on how you can join your child(ren)’s class. This feature will allow teachers and parents to communicate directly with one another.

  • The Elmont District app – download the Elmont Union Free School District from your favorite app store. When installed, click on the tool icon and check off Dutch Broadway. You will receive all notifications sent by the school.

  • The Elmont UFSD website – www.elmontschools.org – Visit the website to receive the most up-to-date information throughout the school year.

  • The Dutch Broadway Virtual Backpack – a virtual hub where you can find all letters and flyers shared by the school.

  • Blackboard Connect – a pre-recorded voice call sent to the phone number on file with the school. We ask that your contact information be updated accordingly.

Thank you for your continued support as we work together as a school community, inspiring our children to strive for and achieve their goals.

Sincerely,

Mrs. Cynthia Qasim

Principal, Dutch Broadway School

Dutch Broadway School Students Celebrate Holiday Season with ‘Snow-Gaza!’

Students visiting an outdoor petting zoo thumbnail263544

Dutch Broadway School hosted an unforgettable day of fun and holiday cheer, Snow-Ganza! on December 12. From Pre-K to sixth grade, the Elmont scholars enjoyed a whirlwind of winter wonderland activities that brought the magic of the holidays to life.

All students visited an outdoor petting zoo, where adorable sheep, playful goats and fluffy alpacas – dressed in their holiday finest – stole the show. Ducks, chickens and rabbits also joined the fun, as students learned how to gently pet and care for these lovable animals. Along with the outdoor petting zoo, students frolicked in snow created by LI Foam, while enjoying a high-energy dance party.

Back inside, the gymnasium was transformed into a holiday wonderland, bursting with festive activities. Younger students tapped into their creativity by decorating ornaments and cookies while sipping on delicious hot chocolate. They also cozied up in the school library for a read aloud of “How to Catch a Snowman” by Adam Wallace. Meanwhile, the older students embraced the festive spirit by bonding over friendly board game competitions in the afternoon.

This spectacular event was made possible by the efforts and generosity of the school’s PTA.

Dutch Broadway School’s fourth grade scholars have recently wrapped up an engaging science unit, diving deep into the fascinating world of plants and animals.

Throughout the unit, they expanded their knowledge by reading captivating books and articles, exploring how organisms adapt to survive in their environments. Through exciting hands-on investigations and interactive activities, they brought their learning to life.

With the expert guidance of Instructional Coaches Mrs. Hernandez and Mrs. Racioppo, the fourth grade classes took part in the “Life Cycles and Traits: Circle of Life” lab — one of the four state-required labs. This activity reinforced key concepts about growth, reproduction and survival in living organisms.

To cap off the unit, the scholars embarked on a creative challenge: designing their very own imaginary plants and animals. These young scientists invented extraordinary creatures, each with unique characteristics that would help them thrive in a fictional habitat of their design.

“This final project not only allowed students to apply their knowledge creatively, but also helped them synthesize information from the unit, fostering critical thinking and a deeper understanding of the relationship between structure, function and adaptation,” Principal Cynthia Qasim said.
